France post study prospects

FRANCE POST-STUDY, RESIDENCE AND CITIZENSHIP: COMPACT REFERENCE
Checked: 3 September 2026. Scope: non-EU students. EU/EEA/Swiss and Algerian
citizens have different rules.

CORE RULE
Studying in France does not itself give a right to remain permanently. The
usual path is: French degree -> 12-month post-study permit -> work/business
permit -> long-term residence and/or naturalisation application.

1) POST-STUDY PERMIT
Name: "recherche d'emploi / cr ation d'entreprise" (job search/business
creation), issued as a temporary residence card or VLS-TS.

Eligibility while in France:
- Hold a valid student or student-mobility permit; AND
- Have obtained in the preceding 12 months a French licence professionnelle,
Mast re Sp cialis , eligible MSc, Master, or equivalent/higher degree.
- A standard Bachelor degree is not automatically eligible.
- This route does not apply to Algerian students.

If the graduate has left France: the eligible French degree plus an application
within 4 years of graduation can support an application for the VLS-TS version.

Duration and application:
- Valid for 12 months only; it cannot be renewed.
- Apply at the prefecture/sub-prefecture during the final 2 months before the
student permit expires.
- Typical evidence: valid permit/passport, address, health insurance, photos,
final diploma or definitive success certificate, and business project if
applicable.

Work during this permit:
- The graduate may work as an employee; the employer does not need a separate
work authorisation.
- The job must relate to the course of study and currently pay more than
EUR 2,800.53 gross per month.
- The normal student limit of 964 hours per year does not apply.

2) STAYING AFTER THE 12 MONTHS
Before expiry, obtain a professional residence status. Main choices:
- Employee/temporary-worker permit: job related to training and at least
EUR 2,800.53 gross/month gives the graduate route without the labour-market
test being used against the applicant.
- Talent permit: if the role and current salary meet the category's separate
requirements.
- Entrepreneur/profession-lib rale or Talent project-holder permit: for a
viable business project.
If no qualifying permit is obtained before expiry, the post-study permit cannot
be extended merely to continue job hunting.

3) "PERMANENT RESIDENCE" IN FRANCE
The practical equivalent is the "r sident de longue dur e-UE" card.
- Normally requires 5 years of legal, uninterrupted residence on qualifying
non-student statuses, stable/regular/sufficient income, health insurance,
French B1, and the resident civic exam.
- Student and student-mobility statuses are expressly excluded from this
ordinary long-term-resident route. Do not assume study years count; confirm
the exact calculation with the prefecture after changing status.
- Absences are generally limited to 6 consecutive months and 10 months total
during the 5-year period.
- The card is valid for 10 years, renewable, and permits employment in France.
- A permanent resident card may be requested at renewal of a 10-year resident
card. It is not an automatic post-graduation status.

4) FRENCH CITIZENSHIP (NATURALISATION)
Permanent residence is not required before naturalisation.
- Standard statutory residence period: 5 years in France.
- Potential reduced period: 2 years for a person who successfully completed
2 years of higher education towards a diploma issued by a French university
or higher-education institution.
- The reduced period is only eligibility, not approval. Naturalisation is
assessed individually and strong professional/social integration is vital.
- Required in practice: valid residence status at filing, France as the actual
centre of professional/material/family interests, stable income, tax record,
good character, French B2 (spoken and written), civic exam, and interview.
- A complete-file receipt starts an administration period of up to 18 months,
possibly extended once by 3 months. It may be 12 months after 10 years of
habitual residence.
- France allows dual nationality; verify the law of the person's present
nationality separately.

AI-SAFE TIMELINE
1. Choose an eligible French degree, preferably a licence professionnelle or
Master's-level programme.
2. Before the student permit ends, apply for the 12-month post-study permit.
3. Within that 12 months, obtain a qualifying job or business status.
4. Maintain continuous legal residence, work/income, insurance, tax and
integration evidence.
5. Long-term resident card: normally after 5 qualifying non-student years.
6. Citizenship: may be applied for earlier than long-term residence if the
5-year rule, or the French-study 2-year reduction, and every other
naturalisation requirement are met.
